Samsung Plans Native Stablecoin Support for Mobile Wallet

Samsung could soon bring stablecoins to one of the world’s largest digital wallets, a move that would put cryptocurrency-based payments in front of roughly 800 million users.

Although the details of the integration remain unclear, the company said stablecoin support for Samsung Wallet is on its roadmap for this year. This would mark a major milestone for digital assets, and it could happen sooner rather than later.

Although no stablecoin issuer, blockchain, or launch date has been confirmed, interest has renewed around Samsung’s partnership with Coinbase, established last year, which brought crypto services to the company’s devices.

There have also been reports that Circle’s USDC stablecoin could be among the first stablecoins integrated into Samsung Wallet.

Part of a Sweeping Initiative

The stablecoin integration is part of a broader initiative by Samsung to expand its ecosystem through financial services.

The company recently unveiled plans to enter the U.S. credit card market with the Samsung Galaxy Card, which will be issued by Barclays and operate on Visa’s network. The card’s rewards program is designed to encourage spending at Samsung’s physical and online stores while rewarding users for purchases made through Samsung Wallet.

Samsung also added buy now, pay later financing to its mobile wallet last year through a partnership with Splitit, giving users the ability to pay for purchases in installments without leaving the Samsung ecosystem.

A Powerful Accelerant

While these additions are significant, the stablecoin integration could be the most transformative. For consumers, stablecoins offer near-instant, low-cost, and transparent payments that can improve use cases such as cross-border payments.

Bringing this capability to a mobile wallet with Samsung Wallet’s scale could serve as an accelerant for stablecoin adoption.

Despite the growing excitement surrounding digital assets, obstacles to broader stablecoin use remain. One of the biggest is merchant acceptance. Many stablecoin holders still struggle to find businesses that accept them as payment. As a result, many users convert at least some of their holdings back into dollars, according to findings from MNEE Pay and YouGov.

Integrating stablecoins into Samsung Wallet could help address this challenge by putting them front and center on hundreds of millions of Android devices, potentially encouraging greater merchant acceptance of this efficient payment alternative.

“The biggest hurdle for stablecoins hasn’t been technology, it has been distribution,” said Joel Hugentobler, Cryptocurrency Analyst at Javelin Strategy & Research. “Instead of asking people to download another wallet or app, Samsung could put stablecoins into a wallet millions of people already use, so it makes it much easier for the average joe to hold, send, or even spend stablecoins.”

“The details still matter, like which stablecoin, which blockchain, and which countries will launch it, but if they can make the experience seamless, this could be a meaningful step toward mainstream adoption–especially for cross-border payments,” he said.
