Circle Assembles Impressive Backing for Arc Blockchain

Circle has unveiled a blockchain purpose-built for the industry—and for the agentic environment on the horizon.

The digital asset firm’s Arc blockchain is due to launch in September launch and has already attracted substantial support from leading payments organizations. These backers include Visa, Mastercard, BlackRock, MoneyGram, Standard Chartered, and New York Stock Exchange parent company Intercontinental Exchange.

Circle’s aim is for Arc to become the primary blockchain infrastructure for organizations, though achieving that will be challenging in a crowded market.

“The names behind Arc give it instant credibility, but does not automatically mean institutional adoption,” said Joel Hugentobler, Cryptocurrency Analyst at Javelin Strategy & Research. “The real test is whether they can put meaningful payment, settlement, and even tokenized asset volume on the network.”

Improving the Product Line

Circle already has many of the necessary building blocks in place, largely due to the success of its USDC stablecoin. While USDC has long been the company’s flagship product, Circle has expanded aggressively in recent years.

That expansion includes receiving approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish a federally chartered trust bank, as well as launching of the Circle Payments Network to facilitate cross-border payments.

Perhaps even more significant is Circle’s recent acquisition of IBM’s extensive blockchain portfolio. As an early adopter and innovator in the space, IBM amassed more than 680 patent families and roughly 1,000 issued patents worldwide.

Circle plans to use this intellectual property—which spans blockchain, financial services, enterprise infrastructure, and cloud operations—to strengthen its product line, including Arc and USDC.

Volume Tells the Story

While there is momentum behind Circle, lingering questions about Arc remain. The key issue is whether the company’s footprint and strong industry backing will translate into real-world adoption of the blockchain.

There are early signs that it could. BlackRock has not just voiced support for the network but is also reportedly planning to bring its tokenized money market fund, BUIDL, to Arc, using the USDC stablecoin to streamline the institutional investment process.

However, it is too early to forecast whether this represents the first step toward broader institutional adoption.

“Arc’s USDC-denominated fees, rapid settlement, and compliance-focused infra address real institutional pain points, so it has a stronger path to institutional adoption,” Hugentobler said. “But transaction volume, not partner logos, will ultimately tell the story.”
