KuCoin is bringing stablecoin payments into a more familiar business tool: the prepaid card. The crypto exchange’s payments arm has launched an enterprise gift card that allows companies to issue USDT and USDC-based cards for rewards, promotions and other business uses, marking another effort to connect digital assets with everyday commerce.
The KuCoin Gift Card targets corporate entities seeking a digital payments option that avoids traditional banking rails and fiat settlement processes. The cards support both Tether USDT and Circle’s USDC stablecoins.
In the crypto space, prepaid card products have largely focused on retail users purchasing gift cards with crypto from merchants. KuCoin’s offering extends that model to businesses, with features such as bulk issuance and API integration designed for customer rewards, promotional campaigns, employee incentives, and community engagement.
A prepaid card can simplify digital asset payments by removing some of the friction associated with direct wallet transfers, such as managing wallet addresses or selecting blockchain networks. From the user’s perspective, the process is intended to resemble the experience of using other types of gift cards.
Entering the Payments Ecosystem
The strategic rationale for KuCoin is clear. The exchange is looking to expand beyond traditional crypto trading services and build a connection between digital assets and broader commerce.
The company’s existing infrastructure as a crypto exchange could provide an advantage for the product. Traditional gift cards often serve as a way to introduce recipients to a brand’s ecosystem through loyalty programs or rewards. Similarly, redeeming a KuCoin Gift Card could bring users into KuCoin’s platform, where they may hold digital assets, use them within supported merchant networks, or transfer the funds elsewhere.
Accounting Considerations
There may also be accounting implications for businesses using stablecoin-based prepaid products. A report from Javelin Strategy & Research, Prepaid and Stablecoins: Turning Liabilities Into Assets, argued that stablecoins could transform how prepaid cards are treated by changing the nature of the underlying balance. Instead of representing a traditional cash-based prepaid liability, stablecoin-backed cards could potentially provide businesses with more flexibility in how those funds are managed and deployed.
The practical impact, however, will depend on accounting standards, regulatory treatment, and how companies structure their use of the product. Whether those benefits translate into a meaningful reason for businesses to adopt stablecoin-based prepaid cards remains an open question.
