American Express Expands Virtual Cards for Commercial Payments

virtual card

Digital platforms have improved consumer payments in nearly every way, but the experience has yet to fully extend into commercial applications. Virtual cards can help address some of these gaps while giving treasury teams greater control and visibility into spending.

The technology has a broad range of applications, from supplier payments to travel and employee expenses. As demand for these capabilities grows, American Express is expanding its virtual card program to give businesses more ways to manage commercial spending.

A key advantage of virtual cards is their flexibility. Businesses can generate unique digital card numbers and set parameters around how, where, and when those cards can be used. For example, an Amex virtual card could be issued for a one-time supplier payment or provided to a contractor or intern for a defined period, without requiring the organization to issue a traditional physical card.

American Express is also extending that flexibility beyond the payment itself. Its expanded platform also gives treasury teams tools to manage virtual cards while gaining greater visibility into transactions, reporting, and spending patterns.

Smoothing Cumbersome Processes

That improved visibility is particularly valuable when virtual cards are applied to processes that have typically required significant manual work. Travel and expense reimbursement, for example, often involves employees paying out of pocket, collecting receipts, submitting expense reports, and waiting for the organization to reconcile and reimburse those transactions.

Virtual cards can simplify that workflow by giving businesses a way to fund expenses directly while maintaining control over the parameters of each payment. American Express has worked with Emburse on a virtual card program for expenses, which highlights how these tools can be integrated into existing expense-management processes.

A virtual card could be issued for a single business trip, with spending limits tailored to the assignment. And transactions can then flow into expense systems, giving the organization more timely information about spending while reducing the administrative burden on employees and finance teams.

In a way, the value of virtual cards extends beyond replacing a physical card number. For American Express customers, the technology can become part of a broader payment and expense-management infrastructure, connecting the transaction itself with the data and workflows needed to manage it.

External Forces Fueling Momentum

The operational benefits of virtual cards are helping drive adoption, but broader economic and technological shifts are adding to that momentum.

One factor is the continued pressure on businesses to operate more efficiently in a difficult macroeconomic environment. Business are constantly looking for ways to maximize cash flow, strengthen spending controls, and reduce unnecessary administrative work.

Another potential catalyst is the emergence of agentic commerce. As businesses explore AI agents that can act on their behalf, trust remains one of the biggest obstacles to adoption, especially when those actions have financial impacts. The controllable scope and security measures inherent in virtual cards could make them an integral part of the future agentic environment.
